That’s true of everyone on the field Friday, including the Yankees, who now must recover from as knee-buckling a gut punch as can be thrown. The good news is, there remains plenty of baseball to be played, countless opportunities for the Yankees to do so, and the standard set for the rest of the series has gone from high to stratospheric.< how old is cary elwes /p>
Legendary radio sports commentator John Sterling surprised fans with a return to the microphone just in time to celebrate the Yankees’ Game 4 win of the World Series. NBC’s Jesse Kirsch reports for “TODAY.”
The New York Yankees will try to make history on Wednesday night in World Series Game 5. The Yankees dropped the first three games against the Dodgers in the 2024 Fall Classic, but they kept their season alive on Tuesday with a come-from-behind win in Game 4. Anthony Volpe hit a grand slam in a game that will also be remembered for a bizarre fan interference incident involving Mookie Betts in the first inning.
“Just look at this game,” Freeman said, and he started listing everything that had unfolded. Four innings of shutout baseball. The Dodgers manufacturing a run on a sacrifice fly. Giancarlo Stanton countering with a towering two-run home run. The Dodgers punching back with a run off Yankees closer Luke Weaver. The Yankees seemingly going ahead on what appeared to be a Gleyber Torres home run, only for it to be ruled interference when a Dodgers fan reached over the fence to snag it, which was confirmed by replay. New York tagging Los Angeles’ best reliever, Blake Treinen, for a run in the 10th. And the tension of the bottom of the 10th: a walk and an infield single to bring up Shohei Ohtani, whose foul out to left advanced the runners to second and third, opening up a base for Yankees manager Aaron Boone to intentionally walk Mookie Betts, giving Freeman the matchup against Cortes, who hadn’t thrown a pitch since Sept. 18.
Game 3 world series 2024
With his Yankees down three runs in the fourth inning of Game 3 of the World Series, Stanton had, moments before this sad dash, ripped a double to left for the first Yankees hit of the game. Two batters later, with two outs on the board, shortstop Anthony Volpe lofted a hit of his own, a soft line drive over the shortstop’s head. Ball touching turf presented the desperate home crowd with a glimmer of hope, a reason to cheer, a morsel of optimism.
Stanton thudded down the third baseline, batting gloves clenched tightly in his left hand, eyes focused squarely on his destination. The Yankees’ designated hitter, who turns 35 in 11 days, helped carry this ballclub to the World Series. Nobody has crushed more homers this October. But while Stanton can still club a baseball harder than practically anybody on planet Earth — he laced a 119.5 mph groundout on Monday — his baserunning is hard to believe and even harder to watch.

Fat Joe performed “New York” and “All the Way Up” prior to Game 3. New York native Leslie Odom Jr. sang the national anthem and Derek Jeter threw the ceremonial first pitch. Joe’s performance was mostly panned by fans on social media. Clarke Schmidt was the starting pitcher for the Yankees and Walker Buehler for the Dodgers.
The first was the historic blast that took Game 1 in the 10th inning, the first World Series game to end on a walkoff grand slam. The second was a solo shot in Game 2 to put the Dodgers up 4-1 by the third inning.

Those that want to be close to the stadium should purchase tags within the Stadium Way loop. General Parking costs at least $100, but passes are going quick. Lots A-P are the most expensive options out there but are also the lots closest to Dodger Stadium. Those parking passes start at $230.
The 1986 World Series marked the second time, after the previous year’s series, in which the winning team lost the first two games of the series at home. It was also the first World Series to use the designated hitter only in games played at the American League representative’s stadium, a policy that was maintained until the National League’s adoption of the DH in 2022.
Ron Darling was the scheduled starter for the Mets, who were employing a three-man rotation for the series consisting of him, Dwight Gooden, and Bob Ojeda. In his two starts so far in the series, Darling had a 1–1 record with an earned-run average of 0.00; the only run he had given up, which resulted in his Game 1 loss against Bruce Hurst, was unearned. The rainout gave him an extra day off, so he would be pitching on his normal four-day rest.
On the tenth pitch of the at-bat, Stanley finally got Wilson to put the ball in play, forcing a ground ball to first base. Buckner had been playing near the foul line to give himself a better chance to get the speedy Wilson out on a ground ball, but when he went to field the ball it went under his glove and through his legs into right field. Knight scored from second, completing the rally and giving the Mets a 6-5 victory to tie the series and force a seventh game.

History suggests that teams down 1–3 also face long odds of winning. Only about one-in-nine teams facing that situation have come back to win. The five teams that did manage to come back from 1–3 are the Pirates (twice) in 1925 and 1979, the Yankees in 1958, the Tigers in 1968, and the Royals in 1985. Interestingly, the chances of winning when ahead or behind 3–2 are almost the same as the chances of winning when ahead or behind 2–1. Teams with a 3–2 lead win about two-thirds of the time and teams down 2–3 win about one-third of the time.
“Takes just one,” said Aaron Judge, an enormous man facing enormous scrutiny for his 1-for-12 showing with seven strikeouts in this Series. “All it takes is one swing, one at-bat, one play. Everything changes for us. That’s just the mindset you’ve got to have going into this.”

There has not been a Fall Classic sweep since the Giants swept away the Tigers in 2012. The 11 consecutive World Series without a sweep is the second-longest stretch in history, behind a 12-year streak from 1977-88.
