The erratic movement patterns of enemies, the constantly respawning enemies, the ticking timer, and countless other factors make progression in Ghosts ‘n Goblins an exercise in futility at times. Whereas Souls games at least leave room for progressing your character, this doesn’t. Practice helps, but never makes perfect.
The “Crash Bandicoot” games are known for having brutal, precision platforming. However, its newest game brought the series back with an even greater degree of difficulty. Just completing the base game is hard enough, with tough jumps and new powers and characters to utilize in achieving them. Cortex Castle alone has given the internet collective nightmares for how hard it is! But players trying to smash every crate and discover every secret are in for a bad time! Still, at least all the death animations are fun to watch. You’ll certainly be rewatching them plenty of times!
Choose from any of the early Contra games and see what we mean. We hated it, but we grew to love it and crave its approval. Contra is certainly one of the hardest games ever made. It set the tone in terms of raw difficulty and remains hard as nails to this day. Those who get stressed easily should avoid it at all costs. However, if you fancy a real challenge, set aside some time for this one.

Super Mario 3D World might be the best child-friendly game ever made.The levels are open and friendly. The game can be played with simple controls but hides a fair amount of depth for experts. Most importantly, Super Mario 3D World is designed from the ground up for cooperative play. Some games have co-op tacked on, but everything about this game is designed to suit people playing together. If you’re looking for a game to play as a family, this is the one. If you have a Wii U, that is. The good news: Nintendo is planning to bring this game to the Switch.

I had many an afternoon after school enjoying that gem. I thought the ability to swap between five different lizard types, all with their own abilities, was a game-changer! Given the success of recent platformers like Astro Bot, I’d absolutely love to see it come back as a remake or even a sequel.

The Lost Crown is initially just a competent platformer, where you navigate a byzantine maze-like palace with routes that unfold as you improve. Then the meticulousness of its assembly dawns on you.
